England v Mexico: The Big One
England's round of 32 tie was harder work than the scoreline suggests. DR Congo went ahead before Harry Kane scored twice to turn it into a 2-1 win, and the reward is a round of 16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico in the early hours of Monday 6 July, kicking off at 1am BST.
The broadcast split settled before the tournament puts England's round of 16 on BBC One, so set the recorder or plan the late night around iPlayer. Playing a host nation in front of a partisan crowd is the hardest draw the round offered, and Mexico have home advantage in every sense.
If England win, the route from there is already mapped: the quarter-final falls in the 9 to 11 July window on ITV1, a semi-final would be back on BBC One on 14 or 15 July, and the final on 19 July is on both channels.
What Happened to Scotland
Scotland's first World Cup since 1998 ended at the group stage. The 1-0 win over Haiti in the opener was as good as it got: Morocco won the second match 1-0, Brazil won the third 3-0, and Scotland finished third in Group C. The expanded format sends eight third-placed teams into the round of 32, but a goal difference of minus three left Steve Clarke's side outside the cut. Painful, but the campaign ended a 28-year wait, and the qualifying cycle for 2030 starts soon enough.

The two broadcasters split all 104 matches before the tournament, 54 on BBC channels and 51 on ITV, with the final shown on both. That arrangement carries through the knockouts: each round is divided between BBC One and ITV1, with every match streamed free on BBC iPlayer or ITVX depending on who holds it.

Surviving the Kick-Off Times
The knockout rounds keep the North American time zones, so UK kick-offs still range from late afternoon to the small hours. England v Mexico at 1am is the extreme case. Three practical points:
- Fewer games, bigger stakes. The round of 16 has two matches a day, so a quick morning check of the World Cup hub tells you whether tonight needs an alarm or a recording.
